About NPI numbers
An NPI is a ten-digit number that identifies a healthcare provider on claims. Type 1 belongs to an individual, Type 2 to an organisation. Both are permanent and neither is reissued.
CMS publishes the full file monthly and increments weekly. We import the monthly replacement, which is why the date on the right is the date we pulled it rather than a vague claim about being current.
Deactivated NPIs stay visible here, marked as deactivated. Someone looking up a provider who left practice needs to know that is what happened, not get a blank page.
Worth knowing: having an NPI does not mean a provider is licensed or credentialed. CMS states this explicitly. An NPI is an identifier, not a credential.
